Do you know what our best selling product is?
It is probably not what you think.

It is not a sofa, a statement chair or one of the beautiful accessories styled throughout our showroom. It is our signature scent, La Maison, available in candles and diffusers.

The moment someone walks through the doors at Niche Decor, the scent is often one of the first things they notice. Before they have had time to take in every vignette, fabric or finishing detail, they pause and ask, What is that beautiful smell?

We hear it all day long. For many of our clients, bringing home a La Maison candle or diffuser is a way to take a little piece of the Niche experience with them.

The Invisible Layer of a Well Designed Home

When we think about designing a home, we naturally focus on what we can see. The furnishings, colour palette, lighting, artwork and accessories all play a part. But the most memorable spaces appeal to more than one sense. Scent is an invisible layer of design that can shape the feeling of a room before anyone notices a single object within it.

Just as warm lighting makes a space feel inviting and a beautiful fabric adds softness, fragrance helps set the mood. It can make a home feel calm, grounded and thoughtfully cared for. It quietly says something about the way you want to live and how you want others to feel when they enter your space.

For us, that feeling is warm, earthy and relaxed.

The Story Behind La Maison

We named our signature scent La Maison, French for the home, because it captures the feeling we hope to create in every space we design. We want a home to feel welcoming, layered, refined and deeply comfortable.

La Maison is an earthy fragrance inspired by the outdoors. A warm, woodsy base is layered with a touch of cardamom, delicate hints of violet and leathery, musky tones. The result is sophisticated without feeling formal and distinctive without overpowering the room.

It works beautifully with the natural materials, organic textures and relaxed elegance that define the Niche aesthetic. More importantly, it creates an immediate sense of ease. It is that feeling of exhaling when you arrive somewhere you want to stay.

Scent Creates Memory

Our sense of smell has a powerful connection to memory. A familiar fragrance can transport us back to a favourite place, a particular season or a moment shared with people we love.

That is part of what makes a signature home scent so special. Over time, it becomes connected to everyday rituals and meaningful occasions. Quiet mornings, family dinners, evenings by the fire and celebrations around the table all become part of it. Eventually, the scent does more than create atmosphere. It begins to feel like home.

We love that La Maison has become this for so many of our clients. They first experience it in our showroom and then make it part of the story of their own homes.

A Beautiful Gift for the Home

La Maison candles and diffusers also make thoughtful host and hostess gifts. They are easy to give, lovely in any season and feel more personal than arriving with the expected bottle of wine. Whether you are attending a dinner, visiting someone in a new home or looking for a simple thank you, fragrance is a beautiful way to offer warmth and atmosphere.

Of course, you may want to bring one home for yourself too.

Is Your Furniture Aging You?

There is a moment that happens in almost every home we walk into. The homeowners are busy, engaged, living rich full lives. And then we step into their bedroom, or their basement, or a spare room that has quietly become a storage unit, and time seems to have stopped somewhere around the year they moved in. Furniture does not just sit in a room. It holds a story, and sometimes that story stopped being written a long time ago.

Furniture does not just sit in a room. It holds a story, and sometimes that story stopped being written a long time ago.

The Someday Trap

Almost every homeowner we meet has a version of the same story. They bought a bedroom set when they first got married, back when the budget was tight and the furniture was simply whatever they could afford at the time. That was supposed to be a starting point. Instead, fifteen years pass. Sometimes twenty.

It is rarely a decision. Nobody wakes up one day and decides to stop updating their home. It is always someday. Kids grow up and move out. A house that was designed around a young family now echoes a little differently. Or a family moves into a brand new home and brings every piece of furniture from the last one with them, fully intending to design it properly once they settle in. Settling in takes longer than anyone expects, and the furniture stays exactly where the movers left it.

The result is a home filled with pieces that were scaled and styled for a different life, in a different house, at a different time. Proportions that do not relate to the new rooms. Styles that do not relate to the architecture. You end up just making do, in a home you are supposed to feel proud of.

The Signs You Stop Seeing

Here is the part that surprises people the most. You lose the ability to see it. When you live in a space every single day, your eye adjusts. The worn paint becomes invisible. The dated wallpaper fades into the background. A room that used to be a home office or a playroom, now unused and undefined, stops registering as a problem because you walk past it so often you no longer notice it at all.

The basement is almost always the clearest example. It starts as a flexible space full of potential and slowly becomes the place where boxes go to be forgotten. Not because anyone planned it that way, but because nobody ever circled back to finish the thought.

What It Is Really Costing You

The furniture itself is rarely the real issue. What matters is what it does to how you live. Homeowners in this position tend to stop entertaining, because the space no longer feels like something they want to show off. They stop truly enjoying their own home, because it has quietly become background noise rather than a place that feels considered and cared for.

That is the part that keeps people stuck. It is not really about an outdated sofa or a bedroom set that has seen better days. It is about what those pieces represent, and the slow erosion of your relationship with your own home. A house that once felt like yours becomes simply the backdrop your life happens in front of.

Your Home Deserves The Same Care As Your Wardrobe

We think about it this way. Nobody questions the idea of updating their wardrobe for a new season. You would not wear the same coat for twenty years without a second thought. Yet many of us will sit on the same sofa for two decades and never stop to ask whether it still serves us.

A home deserves the same ongoing care and attention your wardrobe gets. It should be allowed to evolve as you do, reflecting who you are now rather than who you were when a piece of furniture was first purchased. This is not about chasing trends or replacing things for the sake of change. It is about making sure your home actually supports the life you are living in it today.

Are You Ready For Another Ten Years To Fly By?

Life does not wait, so there is no real reason your home should either. If you recognized your own bedroom set, your own basement full of boxes, or your own room that stopped serving its purpose years ago while reading this, you are not alone. Most of the homes we walk into have at least one version of this story somewhere inside them.

The question worth asking yourself is simple. Are you ready for another ten years to pass exactly as things are, or are you ready for a home you are genuinely proud to host in, gather in, and live in. Rebuilding, creating and refreshing a space is some of the most meaningful work we do, because it is never really about the furniture.

It is about giving you back a home that feels like yours again.

Life By Design

Every fall, many of us instinctively refresh our wardrobes. We put away the linen, reach for our favourite knits, and inevitably find ourselves editing what no longer feels like us. We hold onto the timeless pieces we love, add a few that reflect where we’re headed, and sometimes surprise ourselves by embracing something we’d never have considered before. If someone had told us ten years ago we’d happily trade our skinny jeans for wide-leg trousers, we probably wouldn’t have believed them.

Our personal style evolves because we evolve. As life changes, our priorities shift, our confidence grows, and we begin surrounding ourselves with things that feel more authentic to who we are today.

The same should be true of our homes.

For over 30 years, the design team at Niche Decor has had the privilege of helping clients create homes that evolve alongside them. We’ve worked with first-time homeowners furnishing a blank canvas, families renovating to better support everyday life, professionals building custom homes, clients creating cherished cottages and vacation properties, and empty nesters reimagining what their next chapter looks like. While every project is unique, the conversation almost always begins in the same place – not with furniture or paint colours, but with lifestyle.

How do you live? How do you want your home to feel? What does a typical Saturday look like? Do you love entertaining? Are you dreaming of quieter mornings with coffee by the fireplace? Do you need spaces that can grow with you, or are you ready to create a home centred around hosting, travelling and enjoying life’s next chapter?

Those answers shape every decision that follows.

The Homes That Grow With Us

For many people, the first home is a thoughtful collection of hand-me-downs, meaningful heirlooms and carefully chosen pieces purchased as budgets allow. Family treasures sit alongside first furniture purchases, and every piece tells part of your story. Some remain with you for decades because of the memories they hold, while others simply serve their purpose during that chapter before making room for what’s next.

As careers grow, families expand, routines change and homes begin working a little harder, so do the expectations we place on them. Maybe it’s choosing fabrics that stand up beautifully to everyday life, opening a kitchen so everyone naturally gathers together, creating better storage for busy mornings, or improving the flow of a home that no longer functions the way it once did.

Great design isn’t about creating a picture-perfect room. It’s about creating a home that works intuitively for the life you’re living today.

Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t your home – it’s you.

Your children become more independent. You begin entertaining more often. You work from home. You travel. You find yourself craving quieter spaces, better function and a home that feels more reflective of the person you’ve become.

This is often when clients tell us, “Our home just doesn’t feel like us anymore.”

It’s one of our favourite conversations because it isn’t really about furniture. It’s about helping people create surroundings that support the life they want to live next.

Designing Around Lifestyle

For many homeowners, an empty nest or a move to a new home presents an opportunity to reimagine how they want to live. Some choose to renovate the home where they’ve built decades of memories, while others purchase a condo, build a custom home or finally create the cottage they’ve always dreamed about. Although each project looks different, they all share a common purpose: creating a home that better reflects the lifestyle ahead rather than the one they’ve outgrown.

That might mean designing a kitchen that naturally becomes the heart of every family gathering, creating a welcoming guest suite for visiting children and grandchildren, or simply making everyday living easier and more enjoyable. These projects aren’t about starting over or chasing the latest trends – they’re about thoughtfully designing for the years ahead and creating spaces that feel as rewarding as the life you’ve worked so hard to build.

Throughout every chapter of life, one belief has always guided our work: evolving your home doesn’t mean replacing everything in it. Some pieces deserve to stay because they’ve become part of your family’s story, while others naturally make way for what’s next. One of the things we enjoy most is helping clients recognize the difference. It’s not about filling a home with new furniture; it’s about thoughtfully curating a space that honours where you’ve been while reflecting who you are today.

Whether we’re undertaking a complete renovation, collaborating with an architect on a custom home, or simply refreshing a room with furnishings, lighting, window treatments and carefully layered accessories, our approach is always the same. We begin by understanding how you want to live, then thoughtfully design around that vision so your home feels both beautiful and deeply personal.

The Next Chapter

The truth is, timeless design has very little to do with following what’s popular today. It comes from creating spaces that continue to evolve alongside the people who live in them. That’s why, at Niche Decor, we don’t begin by asking, “What style do you like?” We begin by asking, “How do you want to live?” The answer becomes the foundation for everything we design.

Just as we naturally refresh our wardrobes to reflect who we’ve become, our homes deserve that same opportunity to evolve. Your surroundings influence how you gather, how you recharge, how you connect with family and friends, and ultimately, how you experience everyday life.

A thoughtfully designed home isn’t about perfection. It should feel comfortable, personal and genuinely lived in – the place you can’t wait to return to at the end of the day, much like that favourite pair of perfectly broken-in jeans that only gets better with time.

Because when your home reflects not only who you are today, but also the person you’re becoming, it becomes more than a beautiful place to live.

It becomes the foundation for the life you want to create.
